Coconut oil is nearly magical. It has a wide variety of uses— it can be used topically, making it a great addition to your beauty supplies, and you can cook with it at high temperatures without losing its structure like most cooking oils, making it the smart and healthy choice for your kitchen as well.
But, other than the obvious things like replacing your olive oil with coconut oil, how do you incorporate it into your daily routine so that you can reap the benefits? You would be surprised how easy it is! Today, I’ve put together a list of 7 super simple things that you can make with coconut oil. All of the ingredients are pretty basic, you’ll probably have most around the house already, and by making your own supplies you can really control what goes into them and ensure they’re all natural. More than that, you can save a few bucks! Read on!
1) Lip Balm
- 2 – 3 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp beeswax (optional)
- 2 – 5 drops of essential oil (tea tree and peppermint are great options)
This one is pretty simple, you would only need to mix up the coconut oil and essential oil to get a moisturizing lip balm! It’s easily stored in the fridge if you’d like to keep it solid, but if you want something to travel with you over the summer I recommend melting down the beeswax and adding it!
2) Body Scrub
- 1/4 – 1/2 cup coffee grounds (used is fine, but dry them out)
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
You’re welcome to adjust the amount of coffee grounds depending on how gritty you’d like your scrub to be, then just mix it up, store in the fridge, and enjoy!
3) Salt Foot Scrub
- 1 cup epsom salt
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup vitamin E oil (optional, can use more coconut oil instead)
You’ll want to keep a 2:1 ratio for salt and oil, but you are welcome to choose between using all coconut oil or adding another (almond, vitamin E) to the mix!
4) Toothpaste
- 3 tbsp coconut oil
- 2 tbsp baking soda
- 5 – 10 drops of essential oil (peppermint, eucalyptus)
All you need to do is mix this up and store it. I’ve heard that some people add a teaspoon of sugar, to make it taste a little better, but I recommend opting for a sweeter tasting essential oil rather than brushing your teeth with sugar!
5) Hand Soap
- 3 tbsp castile soap
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 5 – 10 drops of essential oil
Mix, store, and enjoy— you’ll definitely want to keep this at room temperature, right on your bathroom counter probably, so that the mixture remains liquid.
6) Lotion
- 1/2 cup almond oil
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup beeswax
- 1 tbsp of shea butter (optional)
- 10 – 15 drops of essential oil
This one is a little bit more complicated, since you have to melt down the beeswax, but coconut oil has moisturizing properties so you could opt out of the beeswax if you really want. It’ll just leave you with a runnier finished product.
7) Deep Conditioner
- 3 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar
You may need to adjust this if you have a whole lot of hair, but this easy mixture will work wonders! Just mix it all together, apply the mixture to your hair, and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then just wash it out like normal!
It’s important to remember that coconut oil generally becomes a liquid if it reaches 76°, and if it drops below that it becomes a solid. Keep that in mind while you are deciding where to store your coconut oil products!
