Over the past couple of years, there has been a lot of hype associated with Himalayan pink salt lamps. I am always talking about how the world we live in is becoming increasingly reliant on technology, and therefore we are becoming more and more surrounded by it. While there are the most obvious downsides to technology, did you know too much technology around can actually effect your health?
Technology, everything from your cell phone to your TV and back to your computer, actually release positive ions into the air. Positive ions aren’t great for you to breath in and can lead to depression and fatigue. Himalayan salt lamps help to reverse this issue. Salt lamps are considered “hygroscopic”, which basically means they suck water vapor from the air. The water molecules in the air have contaminants inside, and get trapped in the salt crystal.
Back in the 19th century, Polish salt miners who worked in mines that produced Himalayan salt were actually recognized for having less health problems than the rest of the general population. Crazy!
Since these lamps help filter the air, they can also help with asthma and allergy symptoms— specifically those that effect your respiratory system. They actually make Himalayan pink salt inhalers! Also, there have been studies with evidence that negative ions help boost cilia (the little hairs lining your windpipe) activity, which help keep your lungs clean and clear!
3) Boost Your Energy and Improve Your Mood
Positive ions are linked to exhaustion and seasonal depression (SAD) and other forms of depression. A study funded by The National Institute of Mental Health confirmed that even in small increments, negative ions significantly reduce depression symptoms with no signs of side effects. By the end of the study, 40% of participants were no longer showing any sings of depression.
4) Help You Sleep
The thought here is that too many positive ions lead to lower oxygen and blood levels in the brain, which leads to bad sleeping patterns. You may need two lamps in your room in order to notice a difference with falling asleep, but they should help reverse this problem!
Himalayan salt lamps are an all natural negative ion generator. For maximum effectiveness, I recommend pairing your salt lamp with essential oils to compliment each benefit. You can run your diffuser with lavender oil and turn on your salt lamp when trying to relax before bed, or pair the lamp with peppermint and lemon for a quick energy boost. It will also be more effective if placed near objects emitting positive ions— like your computer or TV!
