Winter is finally here and as the days get shorter and the darkness and cold arrive, it’s easy to start to feel a bit of the winter blues setting in. If you’re anything like me, it can sometimes be hard to stay motivated during the winter months, and towards the end I start feeling a bit of the winter blues.
But don’t worry–not only is it natural, but there are some great ways to combat the seasonal blues. Here are five of my top ways for coping with being cooped up all winter long:
Go outside
I know it’s cold, but wrap yourself up in those layers and go outside and get some sunshine anyway. Spending a little time in nature, even when it’s chilly outside, can be a great way to improve your mood and get your blood flowing. Sunshine also provides vitamin D which is essential for your health. You don’t have to spend hours outside, but a little bit of time can go a long way towards beating the blues!
Drink some tea
I absolutely love drinking tea, so this is a no-brainer for me. There’s nothing better than curling up in a chair with a cup of tea, a blanket, and a good book. Lemongrass tea is unparalleled for helping improve your mood, and its lemony taste might just help bring a little bit of summer into your cool home! Add some rosehips for an additional zing and some immune system enhancement! Then pile on the honey to sweeten and help with
Accomplish something every day
It’s tempting to just sit around and do nothing when the weather is cold, but that’s the worst thing you can do. To combat winter depression, make sure that you’re not just hibernating. Get out and accomplish something every single day—whether it’s cleaning up the house or finishing one of those crafts you’ve had sitting around since the summer. Feeling like you’ve done something is a great method for staying positive!
Spend time with loved ones
You might not be able to be outside, but that doesn’t mean you should just sit inside by yourself and do nothing! Spend the winter reconnecting with loved ones in order to keep your mood up. Invite some friends over for lunch, or go out to a movie with your kids. Do a bake-off with your relatives, or simply enjoy the holiday celebrations and catch up with people you never see.
Boost your immune system
There are always plenty of illnesses floating around during the winter months, and being sick all winter will make anyone down! Take some time and give your immune system a boost this winter so you won’t catch every bug that comes your way.
