Unfortunately, a lot of store bought candles and air fresheners are made with artificial scents that contain damaging chemicals, which can aggravate your skin and lungs. Not to mention they are expensive! Not to worry, though, there are plenty of all natural ways to keep your house smelling amazing all of the time!
Here are 8 of my favorites:
1) Homemade Air Freshener
Making your own homemade air freshener is super simple and only requires a few ingredients that you probably already have! Plus, you can easily make it smell however you like by adding your favorite essential oils. Check out the full breakdown of how to make it here.
2) A Simmer Pot
Boil water and add any ingredients that have a good natural scent to the water. It’ll even help warm your house a little! The possibilities with the simmer pot are endless, some prefer apples and cinnamon while I tend to stick with vanilla and some orange. You can find a nice roundup of simmer pot ideas here!
3) Using Herbs
Using herbs is a very subtle way of keeping your home smelling fresh. You can hang some in your shower or bathroom, such as eucalyptus, and it’ll not only clear up your sinuses but keep your bathroom smelling like a spa! You can also created little pouches filled with herbs (lavender is yummy) for any hard to reach places, like a sock drawer. Some people even rub herbs on their lightbulbs so when they heat up the smell spreads!
4) Wood Blocks
You can actually use pieces of wood, whether they are simple blocks or cute cutout shapes, with essential oils to keep your home smelling good. I recommend using orange and lemon with these, simply because they are a couple of the more potent smells. The best part is it’s super easy to reuse these blocks! All you have to do is add more oil. Check out this article for all of the details!
5) Your Diffuser
Since I’ve already given you essential oil blends for the fall and winter, you’ve probably figured out that my essential oil diffuser is my favorite way to keep my house smelling good. Of course, you’d have to buy the diffuser, but it’s something that will last you for a long time and then you’d only need a few drops of essential oils each time!
6) DIY Potpourri
Rather than throwing your poor, dead flowers away, make your own potpourri! You’ll need to dry out the flowers while adding fruits, herbs, spices, and essential oils to the mix! It takes a little bit of time to dry out, but the process is simple enough. And, not only does it smell good it’s actually really cute. You can find the step-by-step process here!
7) Natural Candles
Instead of buying expensive candles from the store that can have unnatural additives, make your own! This has been on my to do list for a long time, and it’s so simple that I have no good excuse for not getting it done 🙁 You’ll need some soy wax, essential oils, wicks, and containers but the rest comes together easily. Get walked through the process of making your own candles here.
8) Use Something That Detoxifies
If you aren’t really worried about how your house smells and you just want to keep your air clean, just focus on something that can get rid of toxins in the air! Himalayan pink salt lamps are a great option, as well as a bunch of different plants. Just do a little bit of research and you can easily have crisp, clean air that you won’t mind breathing in!
