As you all have probably noticed, the last few posts here on Old Fashioned Families have been by someone new! Since I’ve gotten a couple posts under my belt, I wanted to take a minute and introduce myself. My name is Mary Gannaway, and I get the honor of contributing to Old Fashioned Families for a while 🙂
The heart of this blog is modern homesteading and old-fashioned living, which probably means something a little different to everyone. While I do not consider myself an expert on those subjects, I do think I have a lot of fresh ideas to contribute!
I didn’t grow up in a small town, but I would definitely say my mom raised me to be old-fashioned. Growing up, my sister and I didn’t have many visits to the doctor because my mom always had a home remedy to make us good as new. That is definitely something that has stuck with me. I love to find natural alternatives to medicine, like essential oils, and other home remedies! My mom was also amazing about making products herself—from chapstick to laundry detergent—so I’ve got a lot of her fun concoctions up my sleeve.
As hard as she worked and as much as she did, my mother wasn’t big on cooking. I cooked my first Thanksgiving dinner (maybe my sister helped a little) as a freshman in high school, and my love for cooking has only grown since. It’s kind of nice cooking for one, because I get to experiment a lot more with my recipes.
I’m in my early twenties, and currently attending school online for a hospitality management degree. I keep pretty busy, and unfortunately I don’t have the property to support a large homestead operation, so I try to keep old-fashioned living alive in different ways! My posts will generally be more focused on homemaking. I’ll share tips for making homemade items, old-fashioned remedies, crafting projects, some delicious recipes, and ways to live a simple and organized life.
I really look forward to hearing additional ideas and comments from you guys—I am always open to learning new things or hearing ways to improve my old-fashioned living! Mostly, though, I just wanted to introduce myself and let everyone know that I am excited to be here!
