With 2017 upon us, it’s a great time to set ourselves some new goals. While I am not a huge believer in new years “resolutions” per say, I do think that January 1st is a great time to refocus your priorities, both short and long term, and work towards those goals.
One of my main goals for the year is to get my finances in order, so I’ve been working on getting the best value for my money. One of the easiest ways to cut down on your month-to-month grocery bill (at least you’ll save money throughout the course of the year) is to purchase items in bulk! Warehouse stores have been on the rise for a few years now, and it’s a really effective way to cut costs so long as it’s executed properly.
Here are some items that I always buy in bulk:
For Around the House
- Diapers – When a child moves up a size, it’s a great time to buy a huge package of diapers!
- Dishwasher detergent
- Laundry detergent
- Non-rechargeable batteries
- Light bulbs
- School and office supplies
- Vitamins – Vitamins are often sold as buy one get one half off, and if you know you’ll need another bottle, you might as well save the money!
- Toilet paper
- Trash bags
- Toothpaste
- Soap and shampoo
For the Kitchen
- Beer / Alcohol
- Cereal
- Olive oil
- Spices and seasonings
- Vanilla (and other) extract
- Rice and pasta
- Nuts
- Dry beans
- Butter
- Oatmeal
- Meat
I usually try to avoid perishable items when I shop in bulk, unless (like butter) I know it’ll get used pretty quickly. The most important thing to look at when you’re buying in bulk is the price per unit— most of the time, the bigger the jug of laundry detergent, the less it costs per ounce. You’ll also want to make sure you have plenty of storage space before you start shopping in bulk, or you might start to look like a bit of a hoarder— yikes!
