Well, the new year has come and gone which means that here in the Midwest the winter has finally set in. As I write this, the roads still have a tiny bit of ice on them from the last snow, and I’m wearing a sweatshirt to stay warm at the computer. However, while there are still a few weeks to a month of cold on the horizon, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a things you can do in January to jump start your garden!
Depending on where you live, you may be able to either start seeds indoors under a lamp to ensure they get enough sun, or actually plant them outdoors. We’ll organize the January seedlings by zone for simplicity. If you don’t know which zone you’re in, check this post to figure it out!
Zone 3 and 4
Start these seeds indoors at the end of the month:
- Bell peppers
- Hot peppers
- Tomatoes
Zones 5, 6, and 7
Start these seeds indoors:

- Broccoli (Zone 5, wait til Feb)

Zone 8
Start these seeds indoors:

Plant these seeds outdoors at the end of January:
- Beets
- Carrots
- Chives
- Green onions
- Peas
- Radishes
- Shallots
Zone 9
Start these seeds indoors:

- Broccoli
- Eggplants
- Hot peppers
- Tomatoes
Plant these seeds outdoors toward the end of the month:

Zone 10
Plant these seeds outdoors by mid month:
